Bedside Music
Bedside Music is designed to
promote greater well-being of patients and their families through the
provision of live, relaxing, pleasant music at the bedside.
Bedside Music is never a performance.
It is offered unobtrusively by musicians who are specially trained for
hospital work. The music is relaxing, never fast or loud. The patient is
not required to pay attention to the music. The musician is in the
background, out of the way. Live music at the bedside can be provided
regardless of other activity, and can continue during conversations,
meals, visits, etc.
Live therapeutic music helps
patients focus on something besides their illness, encourages relaxation
and reduces stress.
The Bedside Music program supports
the primary objectives of FMC to maintain and restore health and
well-being. The hospital fully recognizes the concept of total care as
embracing the physical, emotional and spiritual needs of each patient.
Many patients report being so
absorbed by the soothing tones that they forget their pain and
discomfort. In some cases the benefits may continue for several hours.
Research studies have shown many
ways in which music benefits patients. For instance, certain surgical
patients who listened to music have needed less pain medication, were
able to sit up sooner after surgery, and were less likely to feel tired
after going home. Music has been shown to positively affect the immune
system, to aid in relaxation and sleep, to help reduce awareness of
pain, to assist in the recovery process of ill newborns, to calm
agitation, to give children something to focus on during medical
procedures, and a myriad of other beneficial effects for most kinds of
patients. Music can help lower blood pressure. Therapeutic music has
been shown to promote the production of endorphins, which reduce pain.
Music also assists in the production of salivary immunoglobin, which
speeds healing, reduces infection and regulates heart rate. Therapeutic
music has even been shown to ease the delivery process of birthing
mothers.
How to Request Bedside Music:
Simply call extension 1-2722 from within the hospital, or 214-2722 from
outside the hospital, to schedule a musician. If you cannot call, tell
your nurse, the hospital chaplain, or your physician that you would like
to have a visit from FMC’s Bedside Music program.
Harpists, classical guitarists and flutists are available. If you wish,
you may specify what instruments or style of music is desired, and we
will attempt to honor your request according to days and times of
availability.
